BEYOND EVERY SOLVED PROBLEM

An Open Challenge to Mathematicians, AI Researchers, and Systems Scientists

The next frontier is not merely solving harder problems. It is discovering what becomes possible—and what becomes problematic—after solutions change the system itself.

THE EMERGING INVERSION

Artificial intelligence is accelerating mathematical exploration, conjecture generation, and problem solving.

For researchers who have dedicated years to unresolved problems, watching machines rapidly advance the work can be simultaneously frustrating and relieving.

Both reactions are legitimate. But the relief reveals an opportunity.

There will be bigger problems, better questions, and new mathematical frontiers.

The value of mathematics need not diminish as solutions become more abundant. It can expand into understanding the consequences of those solutions and the new conditions they create.

THE TOP THREE PARADOX

Consider any bounded context containing interacting variables, actors, objectives, constraints, and uncertainties.

Identify its three most consequential governing factors.

Then ask:

  1. Can these three adequately represent the system without concealing critical dependencies?

  2. What happens when coordinating them changes the system's conditions?

  3. Which three factors become most consequential in the successor state?

A successful intervention may alter the very conditions that made the original three factors dominant.

The solution can therefore become the origin of the next problem.

This creates a potentially recursive challenge—not because three is necessarily a universal optimum, but because identifying, coordinating, and revising a consequential triad offers a testable form of complexity compression.

THE MATHEMATICAL INVITATION

Develop models that can:

  • Identify: Determine the most consequential factors under explicit objectives and bounds.

  • Compress: Establish when three-factor representations are sufficient and quantify what they exclude.

  • Coordinate: Model interventions across interacting actors, variables, and constraints.

  • Propagate: Trace how interventions transform system states and generate new dependencies.

  • Reconstitute: Identify successor configurations while preserving system viability and corrigibility.

  • Falsify: Establish when the triadic approach fails or is inferior to alternative representations.

The challenge intersects optimization, dynamical systems, game theory, information theory, control theory, and complex adaptive systems.

A RECURSIVE RESEARCH PROPOSITION

Let:

Tₙ = Top3(Sₙ, Bₙ, Oₙ)

Sₙ₊₁ = F(Sₙ, Tₙ, Aₙ, Eₙ)

Where system state, bounds, objectives, actions, and environmental conditions determine the selected triad and its successor state.

The open mathematical questions concern adequacy, convergence, stability, adaptation, computational tractability, and consequences.

No universal three-factor law is presumed. Its validity must be established within specified classes of systems.

THE CHALLENGE TO AI/SI

Build an intelligent system that does more than solve a bounded problem.

Make it capable of recognizing how its solution transforms the problem space, determining which priorities should change, preserving legitimate bounds, and recursively improving its next intervention.

Compare its performance with fixed-priority and unrestricted-variable alternatives using measurable real-world outcomes.

THE FRONTIER

The emergence of highly capable AI does not mark the end of mathematics or human intellectual contribution.

It opens the possibility of investigating problems whose solutions generate new conditions, new relationships, and new opportunities for discovery.

If machines help us solve yesterday's hardest problems, what mathematical foundations will help humans and machines navigate the problems created by tomorrow's solutions?
